Ministry of Water and Irrigation through LVEMP II have supported Fisheries Department with four (4) Patrol Boats to be used for patrolling in Lake Victoria so as to ensure sustainable fish resources for domestic and economic use. The patrol boats were handled over to the Minister of agriculture, Livestock and fisheries Development Dr. Charles Tizeba in Mwanza by the Permeant Secretary Ministry of water and Irrigation Eng. Mbogo Futakamba.
During this event Dr. Tizeba appreciated the support as it has arrived at the right moment following illegal fishing challenges that the ministry is fighting “I am grateful that the ministry of Water through LVEMP II for this support have come at the right time as we fight against illegal fishing that is becoming a big challenge in the Lake” Said Dr. Tizeba.
Dr. Tizeba ordered that all illegal fishing gears to be surrendered to Fisheries department in one month period there after laws and regulations against illegal fishing will be taken to those who have refused to surrender willingly.
In his handing over speech Eng. Futakamba said since 2009 LVEMP II is implementing its activities aiming at having communities living in a conducive environment and sustainable management of resources for the entire Lake Victoria Basin.
Meanwhile, Juma Makongoro Ag. Head of Marine Patrol Unit , said that three (3) boats will be stationed in Mwanza and one (1) to be in Musoma .
