Tanzania Vice President Hon. Samia Hassan Suluhu laid a foundation stone for the rehabilitation of Mwanza City abattoir and construction of artificial wetland at Nyakato on 18th November, 2016.
The rehabilitation of abattoir and construction of artificial wetland is funded by Ministry of water and Irrigation through Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project (LVEMPII) in collaboration with Mwanza City .The rehabilitation and construction of artificial wetland aims at controlling and treating waste water from the abattoir before entering Rivers that are tributaries of Lake Victoria.
Addressing the Nyamagana residents at the event, the Vice President urged Nyamagana authorities to make sure that the project is implemented with quality and value for money are observed up on project completion.
She also called upon all districts to make sure that all LVEMP II interventions aiming at improving environment and livelihood of their people are sustained.
“It is my call to all Districts leaders to ensure that all LVEMP II interventions implemented in your areas are sustained and attain intended objectives” Said Suluhu
Welcoming the Vice President to lay the foundation stone Minister of Water and Irrigation Eng. Gerson Lwenge informed the Vice President that till the rehabilitation of abattoir and construction of artificial wetland are completed more than 1.5 billion Tanzania Shilling will be used.
The minister added that the artificial wetland to be constructed will improve the quality of waste water from the abattoir by treating before discharging to Nyashishi River , which advances to the Lake hence protecting Lake Victoria which is of significance to the nation economically and socially as well.
